10 Auld Lang Syne Covers You Shouldn't Forget

DUBAI (Reuters) - A small U.S. commercial plane has been stuck in Iran for nearly three weeks after making an emergency landing near the city of Ahvaz, the country's airports director said on Sunday. The plane was forced to land because of technical problems, Mahmoud Rasoulinejad said, quoted by the Mehr news agency. "After landing, the crew traveled on to countries around the Persian Gulf and the plane is currently being repaired," he said. Rasoulinejad did not specify who owned the aircraft, where it was headed or the nationality of the crew members. ...

Canadian Travel Insurance and Trip Cancellation Insurance: Protect ...

Whether you are out of the country for a few days or a few weeks, securing travel health insurance before you leave should be considered an essential part of the planning process. ?Costs for medical care in the United States and many places around the world can be very expensive,? says John Thain, president of the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada. ?Travel insurance helps take care of you and your family and can protect your finances.? Thain recommends buying your health insurance policy from a regulated insurance company, and allowing sufficient time to complete the application process before you leave, particularly if you are required to answer medical questions.

Here, he provides some important tips to snowbirds.

Do not rely solely on your government health insurance plan
While you will have some coverage in the event of an emergency, you need to supplement the small amount the government would provide with a plan that will offer more protection. ?Provincial government health plans pay only a very small portion of medical expenses incurred outside of Canada,? says Thain. ?Specialists can help you navigate health-care services outside of Canada and guide you in seeking and receiving proper treatment. If something unexpected happens, you will have someone to turn to for help.??

Know what you?re buying
Thain recommends asking your travel insurance advisor or your insurance company about different plan options: single-trip policy, an annual multi-trip policy or top-up-to-credit card coverage. Be sure to clarify anything you do not understand.

Read through and understand your policy
Rather than take a buy-now-ask-questions-later approach, make sure you understand your policy before you leave. ?Insurance companies can have many different approaches to benefits, exclusions, limitations, eligibility and, especially, pre-existing conditions,? says Thain. ?It is critical to read and understand your policy before you travel in order to avoid unexpected surprises.??

Inform your insurer about changes to your health

If something happens between the time you purchase your insurance and the time you leave, you need to inform your provider. This could result in changes to your policy, warns Thain. ?Be an informed consumer, know your own health and understand your travel insurance policy.??

Three misconceptions travellers have about health insurance:

  • Travel insurance is a substitute for your provincial health insurance plan while you are out of the country.
That is not the case. Travel insurance is for unexpected emergencies only.
    ??
  • There is no need for travel health insurance if you are cross-border shopping and will be gone for only a day or two.
That is not the case. Emergencies can happen at any time to anyone.

  • Once I have my policy, all of my pre-existing conditions will be covered.
That is not the case. It is essential to review your policy and understand how it defines pre-existing conditions and how terms such as ?stable,? ?controlled? and ?treatment? relate to your personal medical history. Ask your doctor for help in answering medical questions that you are not sure about, including medications, tests you are undergoing or have scheduled and any referral to specialists you have recently had.

Newly discovered loris may be slow, but its bite is toxic

A new slow loris species was discovered in Borneo, named Nycticebus kayan.?The little primate weighs less than a pound.

By Jeanna Bryner,?LiveScience.com / December 14, 2012

The newly discovered slow loris primate (Nycticebus kayan) has a furry "face mask" distinct from other slow loris species.

A new small primate with a toxic bite and distinctive facial fur markings has been discovered in the jungles of Borneo.

The new slow loris species is found in the highlands of the island of Borneo and has been named Nycticebus kayan, after a major river, the Kayan, flowing through the region. The trio of scientists also found that two species previously considered sub-species in the Nycticebus genus are officially unique species.

"Historically, many species went unrecognized as they were falsely lumped together as one species," researcher Rachel Munds, of the University of Missouri Columbia, said in a statement.

Closely related to lemurs, the slow loris is found across Southeast Asia, from Bangladesh and China's Yunnan province to Borneo. To distinguish between species, the researchers focused on the seeming face masks of Borneo's slow lorises; fur patches cover their eyes, while their heads are covered with differently shaped caps. The examined photographs and museum samples for eight face mask features, finding there were four species of Bornean lorises. [See Photos of the Slow Loris Primates]

The new species to science, N. kayan, showed a dark, highly contrasting face mask, with dark patches around its eyes. From the specimen examined, the species is about 10.8 inches (273 millimeters) long and weighs about 14.5 ounces (411 grams). The other species include: N. menagensis, N. bancanus and N. borneanus. (N. menagensis had already been recognized as a species.)

The newly identified species illustrate the breadth of biodiversity yet to be discovered in the jungles of Borneo and nearby islands, the researchers noted. The slow lorises, as with other animals on these islands, face threats from human activity.

"The pet trade is a serious threat for slow lorises in Indonesia, and recognition of these new species raises issues regarding where to release confiscated Bornean slow lorises, as recognition by nonexperts can be difficult," said study researcher Anna Nekaris, of Oxford Brookes University in England, in a statement.

Munds, Nekaris and co-author Susan Ford of Southern Illinois University also note this week in the American Journal of Primatology that their results confirm the use of fur color and pattern as a valid way of distinguishing between species of small primates. Some researchers, they wrote, had claimed that because Bornean slow lorises are not a diverse group because they share similar cranial features and all are lacking an upper second incisor. The new study suggests otherwise, the team added.

Maryland trolley company halts wedding rides after gay marriage law

ANNAPOLIS, Md. ? A company whose old-fashioned trolleys are iconic in the city's wedding scene has abandoned the nuptial industry rather than serve same-sex couples.

The owner of Discover Annapolis Tours said he decided to walk away from $50,000 in annual revenue instead of compromising his Christian convictions when same-sex marriage becomes legal in Maryland on Tuesday.

While most wedding businesses across the country have embraced the chance to serve same-sex couples, a small minority has struggled to balance religious beliefs against business interests.

Wedding vendors elsewhere who refused to accommodate same-sex couples have faced discrimination lawsuits ? and lost. Legal experts said Discover Annapolis Tours sidesteps legal trouble by avoiding all weddings.

"If they're providing services to the public, they can't discriminate who they provide their services to," said Glendora Hughes, general counsel for the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights.

The trolley company's decision, publicized by a straight groom offended by what he called "repressive bigotry," offers a snapshot of a local business navigating a new landscape in Maryland's wedding industry, and leaving customers behind for a competitor to swoop in.

The head of the Maryland Wedding Professionals Assn. said the trolley company was the second vendor to refuse business over the same-sex marriage law, which voters upheld in November. The clergyman who led the opposition to same-sex marriage in the state called the company's choice to abandon profits on principle "gutsy" and predicted that more businesses would follow suit.

"That's a bold and noble statement," said Pastor Derek McCoy, executive director of the Maryland Marriage Alliance.

Frank Schubert, the political strategist who ran campaigns against same-sex marriage in Maryland and three other states this year, said opponents predicted collateral damage from legalizing same-sex unions. In November, voters also approved gay marriage in Washington and in Maine, where the first same-sex marriage licenses were issued Saturday.

"This is exactly what happens," Schubert said, adding that religious liberty is "right in the cross hairs of this debate.... The law doesn't protect people of faith. It simply doesn't."

Schubert pointed to a handful of news reports across the country of wedding vendors sued for refusing to accommodate a same-sex ceremony, such as a pair of Vermont innkeepers and a New Mexico photographer.

In Maryland, the gay rights group Equality Maryland said the trolley company's decision appears to be an isolated case. "As long as he doesn't discriminate against other people, he's free to do whatever he wants to do, including withdrawing his business from the industry," executive director Carrie Evans said.

Discover Annapolis Tours owner Matt Grubbs declined repeated requests to discuss the move, beyond acknowledging its economic impact to his business. Grubbs' trolleys, with their interior lighting and quaint feel, had nearly become a staple in Annapolis' wedding scene.

Grubbs confirmed that he had sent an email to prospective client Chris Belkot last month explaining: "We are not able to lend support to gay marriages" as a Christian-owned business. "And as a public accommodation, we cannot discriminate between gay or straight couples, so we had to stop doing all wedding transportation."

Grubbs' message went on to suggest Maryland residents contact their lawmakers to "request they amend the new marriage law to allow an exemption for religious conviction for the layperson in the pew. The law exempts my minister from doing same-sex weddings, and the Knights of Columbus don't have to rent out their hall for a gay wedding reception, but somehow my religious convictions don't count for anything."

Belkot, 31, forwarded Grubbs' email to Annapolis news websites and fired off a response to Grubbs that read, in part: "It is your right to run your business any way you see fit, but let's be honest here, you drive a trolley up and down a street. Not exactly God's work."

Christmas shopping totals a disappointment for retailers | NOLA.com

WASHINGTON -- U.S. shoppers spent cautiously this holiday season, a disappointment for retailers who slashed prices to lure people into stores and now must hope for a post-Christmas burst of spending.

Sales of electronics, clothing, jewelry and home goods in the two months before Christmas increased 0.7 percent compared with last year, according to the MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse report.

That was below the healthy 3 to 4 percent growth that analysts had expected -- and it was the worst year-over-year performance since 2008, when spending shrank sharply during the Great Recession. In 2011, retail sales climbed 4 to 5 percent during November and December, according to ShopperTrak.

This year's shopping season was marred by bad weather and rising uncertainty about the economy in the face of possible tax hikes and spending cuts early next year. Some analysts say the massacre of schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., earlier this month may also have chipped away at shoppers' enthusiasm.

Retailers still have time to make up lost ground. The final week of December accounts for about 15 percent of the month's sales, said Michael McNamara, vice president for research and analysis at MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse.

Still, this season's weak sales could have repercussions for 2013, McNamara said. Retailers will make fewer orders to restock their shelves, and discounts will hurt their profitability. Wholesalers will buy fewer goods and orders to factories will likely drop in the coming months.

Steep discounts weren't enough to get people into stores, said Marshal Cohen, chief analyst at the market research firm NPD Inc.

"A lot of the Christmas spirit was left behind way back in Black Friday weekend," Cohen said, referring to the traditional retail rush the day after Thanksgiving. "We had one reason after another for consumers to say, 'I'm going to stick to my list and not go beyond it.'"

Holiday sales are a crucial indicator of the economy's strength. November and December account for up to 40 percent of annual sales for many retailers. If those sales don't materialize, stores are forced to offer steeper discounts. That's a boon for shoppers, but it cuts into stores' profits.

Spending by consumers accounts for 70 percent of overall economic activity, so the eight-week period encompassed by the SpendingPulse data is seen as a critical time not just for retailers but for manufacturers, wholesalers and companies at every other point along the supply chain.

The SpendingPulse data released Tuesday, which captures sales from Oct. 28 through Dec. 24 across all payment methods, is the first major snapshot of holiday retail sales. A clearer picture will emerge next week as retailers like Macy's and Target report revenue from stores open for at least a year. That sales measure is widely watched in the retail industry because it excludes revenue from stores that recently opened or closed, which can be volatile.

In the run-up to Christmas, analysts blamed bad weather for putting a damper on shopping. In late October, Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, which account for 24 percent of U.S. retail sales.

Shopping picked up in the second half of November, but then the threat of the country falling off a "fiscal cliff" gained strength, throwing consumers off track once again.

Lawmakers have yet to reach a deal that would prevent tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect at the beginning of 2013. If the cuts and tax hikes kick in and stay in place for months, the Congressional Budget Office says the nation could fall back into recession.

Shopping over the past two months was weakest in areas affected by Sandy and a more recent winter storm in the Midwest. Sales declined by 3.9 percent in the mid-Atlantic and 1.4 percent in the Northeast compared with last year. They rose 0.9 percent in the north central part of the country.

The West and South posted gains of between 2 percent and 3 percent, still weaker than the 3 percent to 4 percent increases expected by many retail analysts.

Online sales, typically a bright spot, grew only 8.4 percent from Oct. 28 through Saturday, according to SpendingPulse. That's a dramatic slowdown from the online sales growth of 15 to 17 percent seen in the prior 18-month period, according to the data service.

Online sales did enjoy a modest boost after the recent snowstorm that hit the Midwest, McNamara said. Online sales make up about 10 percent of total holiday business.

Time to Invest in Low Volatility ETFs? - Zacks.com

With 2012 nearing its end, investors are becoming very concerned about the fiscal cliff. ETFs of almost all segments of the market are witnessing modest sell-offs as investors remain concerned about the consequences of going over the ledge, pushing many to steer clear of risky investments and settle for safer havens instead.

If President Obama and Congress fail to work out a plan to prevent the country from falling off the dreaded fiscal cliff, which seems very likely at this point, then the U.S. economy may slip into yet another recession.

With markets expected to be volatile due to this uncertainty, investors who want to stay invested should avoid high volatile products and instead shift their asset base to low volatile products. These products have proved their effectiveness when markets tend to be facing a wall of worry (4 Low-Volatility ETFs to Hedge Your Portfolio).

Investors who invest in low volatility products at times of an uncertain market can make profits above their higher volatility peers. Low volatility ETFs tend to diminish risk and generate decent returns for investors, while higher beta stocks face more severe losses.

However, when markets tend to be bullish, investors generally opt for high beta stocks to attain above-average gains. At this time, high beta stocks beat the low volatility stocks which tend to underperform.

Low volatility ETFs generally include those stocks in their portfolio which have shown more stability in the past and have experienced the least in movement. In 2012, when markets stayed uncertain, low volatility ETFs managed to collect more than $3 billion. (Three Low Volatility ETFs for Stormy Markets).

Markets may turn out to be weak heading into 2013 and investing in a low volatility stock may prove to be a safe bet for investors. But instead of investing in a single low volatility stock, one can put in their money in multiple stocks wrapped in an ETF for even lower risk exposure.

For these investors, we have highlighted a handful of the low volatility ETF options that are currently available and which could provide great exposure to investors in this rocky market environment:

PowerShares S&P 500 Low Volatility (SPLV)

SPLV tracks the S&P 500 Low Volatility Index. The index is comprised of 100 stocks from the S&P 500 Index with the lowest realized volatility over the past 12 months (Four Easy Ways to Play Beta and Volatility with ETFs).

SPLV seems to be very popular among investors. Since its launch in May, the fund could manage to amass an asset base of nearly $3 billion. The fund invests its asset base in a basket of 100 stocks which exhibit low volatility.

The fund is not biased in its individual holdings, however, among sectors the fund is highly dependent on the performance of consumer staples and utility with total allocation of more than 55% in these two sectors. The fund charges a fee of 25 basis points annually and has returned 6.1% over a period of one year.

iShares MSCI USA Min Volatility (USMV)

Another fund which was launched in 2011 is iShares MSCI USA Min Volatility (USMV). Since its inception the fund garnered an asset base of $0.7 billion. This fund provides exposure to a larger basket of stocks than SPLV and is home to 125 securities in total.

Unlike SPLV, the fund?s exposure is not limited to consumer staples and utilities. Instead the fund assigns double-digit allocations to health care, consumer staples, financials and information technology sectors.

The fund also has an edge in expenses charging a fee of just 15 basis points annually while generating a 30-day SEC yield of 2.65% in the process. The fund delivered a return of 8.0% since inception (Inside the Two ETFs up More Than 140 YTD).

iShares MSCI All Country World Minimum Volatility Index Fund (ACWV)

ACWV shares its launch date with USMV with the difference that its exposure is not limited to U.S. equities but spread across world market, low volatility equities. Since its inception the fund could manage to build an asset base of $651.1 million and provides exposure to 278 low volatility stocks (Leveraged ETFs and Volatility: A Powerful Mix).

Although the ETF has been designed to provide exposure to low volatility stocks of many countries, the U.S. accounts for 50.6% of the asset base. Apart from this, Japan is the only country with a double-digit allocation.

Financials, consumer staples, health care and consumer discretionary get a double-digit allocation in the fund. The fund charges a fee of 35 basis points while delivering a return of 8.1% over the past year.

iShares MSCI Emerging Market Minimum Volatility Index (EEMV)

EEMV is the most popular ETF in the emerging market space providing exposure to low volatility stocks. Investors can tap the growth of the emerging markets by investing in a portfolio of 211 low volatility stocks.

EEMV manages an asset base of $787.2 million and charges a fee of 25 basis points annually, comparable to SPLV which is considered king of low volatility ETFs in the domestic space.

Among sector exposures, financials which is regarded as the most volatile sector in the developing markets is the top priority of the fund with an allocation of 26.3%. Apart from this, the fund has double-digit allocations in consumer staples and consumer discretionary.

'Anarchy' creator blasts AMC over 'Dead' exit

AMC

Chandler Riggs as Carl Grimes in "The Walking Dead."

By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter

Former "Shield" writers/exec producers Kurt Sutter and Shawn Ryan took to Twitter on Friday to voice their support for friend and former colleague Glen Mazzara after the showrunner parted ways with AMC's "The Walking Dead."

AMC on Friday announced that its ratings juggernaut "The Walking Dead" would return for a fourth season -- and without Mazzara, who became the second showrunner to exit the zombie drama in as many years.

STORY: AMC renews "The Walking Dead" for fourth season; showrunner Glen Mazzara departing

"Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward and conclude that it is best to part ways," AMC said in a statement.?"This decision is amicable, and Glen will remain on for postproduction on season 3B as showrunner and executive producer." (Filming on season three already has concluded, with the second half of episodes set to return to AMC in February.)

"Sons of Anarchy" creator Sutter took to Twitter late Friday to voice his support for Mazzara and blast AMC -- which has a history of rocky relationships with its showrunners.

"AMC is run by small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of its creative personnel," Sutter wrote. "Time and time again we see events like what happened today with Glen Mazzara. They continue to disrespect writers, s--- on their audience and bury their network. Mazzara took the work-in-progress that was 'Walking Dead' and turned it into a viable TV show with a future. Without him, that future is dim. Showrunners are not development executives, we're not cookie-cutter d------- that you plug into a preexisting model. 'TWD' will suffer. Even zombies need consistency. 'Mad Men' and 'Breaking Bad' will be gone soon. So will AMC. I hope their f------ stock takes a dive and the shareholders line up (AMC president and CEO Josh) Sapan, (AMC parent Cablevision founder Charles) Dolan and (AMC president and GM Charlie) Collier and s--- in their open hands."

PHOTOS: "The Walking Dead's" most shocking?deaths

Sutter's comments come more than a year after the showrunner quit Twitter following his vocal support for former "Walking Dead" showrunner Frank Darabont, whom Mazzara replaced. Sutter, in August 2011, wrote: "No one else wants to f------ say it, but the greed of 'Mad Men' is killing the other two best shows on TV -- 'Breaking Bad' and 'Walking Dead,'" added Sutter, referring to AMC's?then-protracted negotiations?with "Mad Men" creator?Matthew Weiner?and "Breaking Bad" showrunner?Vince Gilligan.

Ryan, meanwhile, broke a holiday-timed Twitter silence to express his concern about whether Mazzara's departure would hurt AMC in the long run.

"Breaking my Twitter silence to comment: AMC, WTF?" Ryan wrote.

"Common knowledge that AMC cut Breaking Bad shorter than it should have been. Now you have creative differences w/ biggest hit's savior?" he added.

"With FX, Showtime, HBO, Starz, Cinemax, A&E, TNT and others to sell to, it's a real question now why good show runners should sell to AMC?" he concluded before returning to Twitter silence.

"Banshee" and "House" EP GregYaitanes also voiced support for Mazzara, writing: "Yo.?@AMC_TV?what are you doing with@WalkingDead_AMC?by canning another great voice???"

From the dept of useless stats: Successful solo pop stars twice as likely to die early

From the dept of useless stats: Successful solo pop stars twice as likely to die early

Friday, December 21, 2012

Successful solo rock/pop stars are around twice as likely to die early as those in equally famous bands, indicates research published in the online journal BMJ Open.

And those who died of drug and alcohol problems were more likely to have had a difficult or abusive childhood than those dying of other causes, the findings showed.

The authors included 1489 North American and European rock and pop stars over a 50 year period between 1956 (Elivs Presley) and 2006 (Regina Spektor, The Arctic Monkeys, and Snow Patrol)

Their achievements were determined from international polls and top 40 chart successes, while details of their personal lives/childhoods were drawn from a range of music and official websites, published biographies, and anthologies.

During the 50 year period, 137 (9.2%) famous rock/pop stars died. The average age of death was 45 for North American stars and 39 for those from Europe.

The gap in life expectancy between rock and pop stars and the general population widened consistently until 25 years after fame had been achieved, after which death rates began to approach those of the general population?but only for European stars.

Solo performers were around twice as likely to die early as those in a band, irrespective of whether they were European (9.8% vs 5.4%) or North American (22.8% vs 10.2%).

A successful solo career may be a proxy for fame, it also raises the question of whether the peer support offered by band-mates may be protective, suggest the authors.

While gender and the age at which fame was reached did not influence life expectancy, ethnicity did, with those from non-white backgrounds more likely to die early. And the chances of survival increased among those achieving fame after 1980.

Nearly half of those who died as a result of drugs, alcohol, or violence had at least one unfavourable factor in their childhoods, compared with one in four of those dying of other causes.

These factors?referred to as adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs for short? included physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; living with a chronically depressed, suicidal, mentally or physically ill person; living with a substance abuser; having a close relative in prison; and coming from a broken home or one in which domestic violence featured.

Four out of five dead stars with more than one unfavourable childhood factor died from substance misuse or violence-related causes.

A career as a rock/pop star may be attractive to those escaping an unhappy childhood, but it may also provide the resource to feed a predisposition to unhealthy/risky behaviours, say the authors.

"Pop/rock stars are among the most common role models for children, and surveys suggest that growing numbers aspire to pop stardom," they write. "A proliferation of TV talent shows and new opportunities created by the internet can make this dream appear more achievable than ever."

But they caution: "It is important they [children] recognise that substance use and risk taking may be rooted in childhood adversity rather than seeing them as symbols of success."

Consumer spending rises by most in three years

10 hrs.

Consumer spending rose in November by the most in three years and a gauge of planned business spending jumped, signs that households and companies are shrugging off some of the fears tighter fiscal policy could cause a recession.?

The Commerce Department said on Friday inflation-adjusted consumer spending rose 0.6 percent, while after-tax income climbed 0.8 percent when adjusting for changes in prices.?

Many economists think business and consumers are wary of automatic government spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to kick in early next year, a scenario known in Washington as the "fiscal cliff."?

"The economy is holding in here at the end of the year despite the concerns about the fiscal cliff," said Gary Thayer, an economic strategist at Wells Fargo Advisors in St. Louis.?

Economists have been expecting economic growth will slow in the fourth quarter as companies slow the pace at which they re-stock their shelves, but the data on spending suggests consumers are offsetting some of that drag.?

Consumer spending grew at just a 1.6 percent annual rate in the third quarter. Real spending declined in October, but November's gain was the strongest since August 2009.?

That suggested purchases by consumers were not taking the hit many expected due to growing fears that going over the fiscal cliff will push the economy into recession. However, consumer confidence declined sharply in early December.?

Late on Thursday, a Republican proposal for averting the fiscal cliff was abandoned, further eroding optimism that a deal would be reached quickly.?

U.S. stocks were sharply lower after the proposal was dropped.?

Spending before taking into account changes in prices rose 0.4 percent. Economists polled by Reuters had expected nominal consumer spending would rise 0.3 percent last month.?

In a separate Commerce Department report, a gauge of planned U.S. business spending rose much more than expected in November, a hint that worries over tighter fiscal policy may not be holding back the factory sector as much as feared.?

Non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a closely watched proxy for investment plans, jumped 2.7 percent last month, the second straight month of solid gains.?

Economists had expected so-called core capital goods orders to rise just 0.3 percent. The reading for October was upwardly revised to a 3.2 percent gain from a previously reported 2.9 percent increase.?

Shipments of non-defense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, used to calculate equipment and software spending in the gross domestic product report, gained 1.8 percent.?

Many economists believe businesses, wary of the fiscal cliff, have been cutting back on capital spending.?

Going over the cliff could drain about $600 billion from an already fragile economy.?

Overall durable goods orders rose 0.7 percent in November, with increases posted for machinery, fabricated metal products, and computer and electronic products offsetting a drag from aircraft.?

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast orders for durable goods, items from toasters to aircraft that are meant to last at least three years, rising 0.2 percent last month.?

Excluding transportation, orders rose 1.6 percent in November. Transport orders were down 1.1 percent. Previously, U.S. manufacturer Boeing reported new orders for its aircraft fell in November to 124 from 152 in the prior month.?

New orders for autos jumped 3.5 percent. U.S. auto sales in November raced to a five-year high for that month on a rebound from storm-ravaged October and the need to replace aging vehicles.?

The Commerce Department gave no indication that Superstorm Sandy, which lashed the East Coast in late October, had any impact on either of the economic reports.?

Studio sessions show how Bengalese finch stays in tune

Julian Richards, deputy editor, newscientist.com

Sober_lab_headphones.jpg

Let's take it from the top again... Human singing stars these days rely on Auto-Tune technology to produce the right pitch, but this songbird does it the old way - by listening out for its own mistakes. And it's also smart enough to ignore notes that are too far off to be true.

Brains monitor their owners' physical actions via the senses, and use this feedback to correct mistakes in those actions. Many models of learning assume that the bigger the perceived mistake, the bigger the correction will be. Samuel Sober at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and Michael Brainard of the University of California, San Francisco, suspected that the system is a bit cleverer than that - otherwise, for instance, a bird might over-correct its singing if it confused external sounds with its own voice, or if its brain made a mistake in processing sounds.

They decided to fool Bengalese finches into thinking that they were singing out of tune, and measured what happened at different levels of this apparent tone-deafness. To do this, they fitted the birds with the stylish headphones shown in the photo above and fed them back the sound of their own singing, processed to sound sharper than it really was. The researchers sharpened the birdsong by degrees ranging from a quarter-tone to one-and-a-half tones. They found that the birds learned to "correct" their pitch more accurately and more quickly when they heard a smaller mistake than when they heard a large one. It was also clear that the bird brains took "errors" seriously when they fell within the normal range of pitches in the bird's song: the birds seemed to ignore errors outside this range.?

Let's just hope all this media exposure doesn't go their heads - they're better unplugged.

(AP) ? NHL players are a step closer to dissolving their union.

Union members voted this week to give the players' association's executive board the power to file a "disclaimer of interest" until Jan. 2.

A person familiar with the outcome of the vote told The Associated Press on Friday that the measure passed easily, drawing more than two-thirds majority that was necessary. However, the executive board hasn't made plans yet to meet to discuss whether to file the disclaimer. If the Jan. 2 deadline passes, another authorization vote could be held to approve a filing at a later date.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the results of the vote had not been announced.

If the executive board files the disclaimer, the union would dissolve and become a trade association. That would allow players to file antitrust lawsuits against the NHL.

Negotiations between the NHL and the union have been at a standstill since talks ended Dec. 6. No bargaining is scheduled, and time is running short to save the season. All games through Jan. 14 have been canceled, more than half the season. The New Year's Day Winter Classic and All-Star game already are victims of the lockout.

A new labor agreement would need to be in place by about that time to salvage a 48-game schedule, the minimum in Commissioner Gary Bettman's opinion for the season to proceed.

The NHL is already the only North American professional sports league to cancel a season because of a labor dispute, losing the 2004-05 campaign to a lockout.

The NHLPA now appears set to follow the lead set by NFL and NBA players. Both dissolved their unions during lockouts last year.

The legality of the lockout is already set to be tried in U.S. federal court after the NHL filed a class-action lawsuit last week against the NHLPA. The NHL also submitted an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board.

The NBA's labor dispute ended less than two weeks after the union was disbanded. Jeffrey Kessler, the lead negotiator for the National Basketball Players Association in that dispute, contends the NHLPA would be wise to go ahead with the "disclaimer of interest."

"I think this is much more likely to lead to a settlement sooner," Kessler told The Canadian Press last week. "The players have concluded that they are on the verge of possibly deciding that it is better not to be a union and using the antitrust laws to attack the lockout, which all fans should be happy with because it'll work."

The league's Board of Governors discussed the possibility of a "disclaimer of interest" on Dec. 5, and Bettman said the NHL didn't see it as a significant threat.

"We don't view it in the same way in terms of its impact as apparently the union may," Bettman said.

Movie Review: ?The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey? And A Long ...

2 & ? popcorns

The-HobbitBy Michael S. Goldberger, film critic

If you promised that, in some distant future, the Grim Reaper would delay his visit to me by two hours and forty-nine minutes, the running time of director Peter Jackson?s ?The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,? I might not feel so put out by its indulgent length. While splendid in several ways, the rewards narrowly outdistance its daunting duration.

Point of disclosure: Never a big fan of alternate universe fiction, I much prefer my metaphors domestically sourced. Still, this is reasonably good stuff if you?re a fan of J.R. Tolkien?s original works and have the requisite time to imbibe the seemingly endless details and minutiae that went into the famed author?s construction of his Middle-earth.

For the uninitiated, that?s where the writer set the majority of his Odyssey-like adventures. Virtual mini pageants about nations, civilizations and the cultural motivations that both form and destroy them, replete with the maxims of history, they consist of a prose unto itself. This means whole different tongues to learn, if you?re of a mind.

In this installment, which will spawn at least two follow-ups from the filmmaker, the acknowledged interpreter extraordinaire of things Tolkien suffuses the silver screen with the panoply of beings who populate those fictional worlds. Hence, we are first introduced to Martin Freeman?s Bilbo Baggins, the title character, who relates his tale in flashback.

Following a visit from Gandalf, a wizard convincingly portrayed by Ian McKellen, Bilbo?s storybook cottage is invaded by a horde of dwarves who, after eating just about everything he had in his larder, invoke his help to regain their homeland. Gandalf has assured them that Hobbits are great burglars, a necessary element to achieving said goal.

Well, this dubious skill is heretofore unknown to the inveterate homebody, who has grown quite content in his life of books, cushy armchair and garden. But Gandalf rails at Bilbo?s bourgeois reluctance, and reminds him of the brave and illustrious Hobbit heritage that has made his comfy lifestyle possible. Naturally, the adventure is soon afoot.

What follows is a seemingly endless rollercoaster ride through all manner of strange and foreboding lands, each informing of yet another set of mores and folkways that must be learned if one is to safely traverse them. I won?t go through the whole gaggle of creatures we encounter, but will state that some are pretty good folks, once you grok their meaning.

But evildoers make up the majority. Trolls comprise a society of murder, mayhem and disdain for all that is good. Orcs are pretty nasty, too. In this episode, that bodes quite badly as Thorin (Richard Armitage), Gandalf?s pick to lead the mission, has been reviled ever since chopping off the Orc king?s hand, supposedly leaving him for dead. Wrong!

While some of these species speak what we hear as English, most of them have their own languages and dialects. But no need to bring along your Middle-earth dictionary unless you don?t put much stock in subtitles. And don?t worry about telling the good guys from the scum. With few politically correct exceptions, the uglier, the more nefarious.

Note at this juncture, however, that as I am among the great unwashed, my review will be and should be besides the point to diehard Hobbit tifosi. Doubtless, sources hip to Hobbit lore will hash out its authenticity ad nauseam. My quest through these eccentric climes is to conclude whether the general viewing public will find the film entertaining.

Thus, on the one hand, there is adventure aplenty, great colorful landscapes and smart, whimsically delivered moral lessons, provided the casual traveler can pick up on enough of the jive without feeling left out of the club. And therein lies the rub. With endless allusion to Hobbit obscurities, one can?t help feel the secret handshake is being withheld.

It occurs that patience is the quality most required by those inclined to drink in the vast glossary of information comprising Mr. Tolkien?s grand creation. Yet, as the twelve-year-old me could spend hours poring over the library of comic books in Norman Ginsberg?s basement, I can see this holding a similar aura for today?s adolescent and litt?rateur alike.

Impressive characterizations both by the protagonists and the motley crew of ancillary beings not only help create the epochal atmosphere, but are often interesting in and of themselves. Of course we identify with Martin Freeman?s Bilbo, our ordinary Hobbit placed in extraordinary circumstances. And as Wizards go, Mr. McKellen is masterly.

But geez, 169 minutes? I?m just getting over ?Reds? (1981), which, at three hours and fifteen minutes might be a good enough diversion if you?re roasting an 18 pound turkey, unstuffed, mind you. While aficionados will say that devotion knows no end, others who take in ?The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey? will worry that the film doesn?t have one.
?
?The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,? rated PG-13, is a Warner Bros. Pictures release directed by Peter Jackson and stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage. Running time: 169 minutes

Student-athletes could lose eligibility, scholarships with tweet missteps

Dec. 17, 2012 ? With a single social-media misstep, student-athletes could lose athletic eligibility or a scholarship. But that's not stopping them from using Twitter -- sometimes even during games, when they may see harsh criticism of their performances from fans, according to a study conducted by Baylor University and Clemson University researchers.

While many college athletic teams prohibit student-athletes from using social media during games, some breach the rules to get a "real-time" commentary on how they are doing during the game, said Blair Browning, Ph.D., an assistant professor of communication in Baylor University's College of Arts & Sciences and lead author of the study.

The study, published in the International Journal of Sport Communication, was based on interviews with 20 student-athletes in an NCAA Division I university. Student-athletes said that they used Twitter to keep in contact with family and friends, communicate with their followers and access information about the games and their athletic performances.

The study, co-authored by Jimmy Sanderson, Ph.D., an assistant professor of communication studies at Clemson University, is called "The Positives and Negatives of Twitter: Exploring How Student-Athletes Use Twitter and Respond to Critical Tweets."

Twitter is ingrained into student-athletes' daily routine, with one athlete saying that "I mean, the kickers and snappers and me are kind of in the corner of the locker room . . . so I'll get on Twitter and I'm like, 'Great first half' . . . "

Other athletes said they wait until after games to use Twitter. In any case, comments often are critical or even abusive about the student-athlete both performance-wise and personally.

"It is tweet-worthy when fans show support because the alternative is obviously the norm," the researchers wrote.

While athletes know that criticism comes with the turf, Twitter critics are especially brutal because "brazen confidence stems from the protection users have behind the phone or computer screen," researchers noted. Even when the critics messages are blocked by an athlete, some followers "somehow find another name and get on and do it again," one athlete said.

Student-athletes' response s to attacks range from shrugging them off to deleting them to using them as challenges to improve.

Others are finding an effective way to cope is through "sub-tweeting" -- referring to a detractor as "OOMF" ("one of my followers") and responding to a remark indirectly rather than using the critic's Twitter ID to spar online.

Some players see Twitter as a chance to brand themselves. But at the university level, they're also operating under the brand of the institution themselves, so "there are tensions," Browning said.

Student-athletes also are subject to greater stricter monitoring and penalties than professional athletes for a social-media blunder. While professionals may be fined or censured, they maintain their ability to play. But student-athletes stand to lose athletic eligibility or scholarships.

"Student-athletes are in a precarious position because they are amateurs, are managing educational pursuits while holding essentially a full-time job with their athletics demands," the researchers wrote.

While a coach may welcome the idea that "20,000 eyeballs" are following an athlete, "at the same time, they'll probably wake up in a cold sweat" about a tweet misstep, Browning said.

Despite how student-athletes handle the messages, critical tweets "are at their core an identity hit," the authors wrote.

One athlete said he felt "low-balled, disrespected . . . It was horrible, and you know, my family was sick on top of that so there was nothing I could do."

Sanderson said that educational institutions should embrace training in social media for student-athletes, including helping them manage critical tweets.

December 18, 2012 -- Researchers in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health assessed the impact of pollution on agricultural worker productivity using daily variations in ozone levels. Their results show that ozone, even at levels below current air-quality standards in most parts of the world, has significant negative impacts on worker productivity. Their findings suggest that environmental protection is important for promoting economic growth and investing in human capital in contrast to its common portrayal as a tax on producers. Results of the study are published in the American Economic Review.

Ozone pollution continues to be a pervasive global issue with much debate over optimal levels. While policy makers routinely note that regulating ozone smog leads to many health benefits like reduced hospitalizations and mortality rates, Matthew Neidell, PhD, associate professor at the Mailman School and principal investigator, set out to investigate whether lower air pollution might also affect job performance. Until this research, there had been no systematic evidence on the direct impact of pollution on worker productivity.

The researchers found that a 10 ppb (parts per billion) change in average ozone exposure results in a significant 5.5 percent change in agricultural worker productivity. "These estimates are particularly noteworthy as the U.S. EPA is currently moving in the direction of reducing federal ground-level ozone standards," said Dr.Neidell, PhD. This past September President Obama said he would not support a proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency to tighten the federal ozone standard because it would pose too heavy a burden on businesses, which stunned public health experts and environmentalists.

Dr. Neidell also points out that in developing countries where environmental regulations are less strict and agriculture plays a more dominant role in the economy, the effects reported here may have a vast detrimental impact on a country's prosperity.
