Nexus 7 sales clocking in at close to a million per month

While it was pretty clear that ASUS' Google-partnered Nexus 7 contributed heavily to the Taiwanese maker's healthy Q3 results, there was no official confirmation on its exact sales figures so far. ASUS CFO David Chang has now come clean and told the WSJ that the 7-incher is close to touching the one million per month mark, just about double the rate of sales at its launch. While this number is a fraction of the iPad's sales (14 million in the last quarter alone), it could well go up due to the recent price drop and the addition of new 32GB models to the portfolio. On the flip side, the Nexus 7 is sure to face heat from close rivals, the Kindle Fire HD and the 7.9-inch Apple iPad mini, while the mega-spec Nexus 10 will also entice some buyers away from ASUS' reach.

EMC slides after 3Q results show slowdown

HOPKINTON, Mass. (AP) ? EMC Corp.'s net income and revenue grew at a slower pace in the third quarter as the uncertain economy led to more cautious spending by customers for its data storage equipment.

The results fell short of Wall Street's expectations and EMC's stock slipped in morning trading.

The company said Wednesday that its net income rose 3 percent as revenue growth slowed from the double-digit gains that it's seen in the 10 previous quarters. Earnings had also grown in the double-digits for the past 10 quarters, helped by the growing need of companies to store and analyze vast troves of data.

EMC earned $626.3 million, or 28 cents per share, in the July-September period. That's up from $605.6 million, or 27 cents per share, in the same period a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were 40 cents per share in the latest quarter. This figure excludes stock compensation expenses, acquisition-related charges and other items.

Revenue grew 6 percent to $5.28 billion from $4.98 billion.

Analysts, on average, were expecting adjusted earnings of 42 cents per share on revenue of $5.46 billion, according to a poll by FactSet.

"For the third quarter, EMC's business continued to grow faster than overall (technology) spending growth and we gained market share in what turned out to be a more cautionary environment than we expected heading into the quarter," said David Goulden, president and chief operating officer, in a statement.

For the full year, EMC expects earnings of $1.24 to $1.26 per share and adjusted earnings of $1.68 to $1.70 per share. Analysts are forecasting adjusted revenue of $1.72 per share.

The company also forecast revenue of $21.60 billion to $21.75 billion, below the $22.03 billion that analysts are expecting.

Shares slipped 23 cents to $24.45 in morning trading after dropping as low as $24.07 earlier in the session. The stock has traded in the 52-week range of $21.25 to 30.

Onavo Extend (for iPhone)

Because no one can see "data," few people grasp how much of it they burn through every month. Especially on smartphones, all this data can result in additional mobile phone plan charges you'd probably prefer not to pay. iPhone owners (running iOS 4.3 and later), and especially those on a limited data plan, should download the app Onavo Extend (free) immediately... over Wi-Fi, of course. Android users, don't despair: there's an Onavo Extend for Android, too.

Onavo Extend is a compression app that works quietly in the background to minimize how much data your phone uses when it's not connected to Wi-Fi. It takes all your data-intensive activities, such as getting mapped directions, sending and receiving email, and browsing the Web, and trims the fat. It's this core money-saving feature that makes Onavo Extend an Editors' Choice iPhone app, although its decent customization options and handful of reports don't hurt either.

How Onavo Extend Works
Onavo Works by routing all Internet-related actions through its servers, where data is compressed before being sent to your device. This is similar to what RIM does with its BlackBerry devices, using server-side compression to reduce the total amount of data transmitted. The Opera Mini Web browser also uses server-side data compression, although it only tackles activity happening within its own app. Onavo works across apps, including Safari, Mail, and so forth.

Since all your data is being routed through Onavo's servers, privacy, security, and scalability should be of concern. So here's what we know: Onavo's system runs on Amazon's EC2 cloud servers. Its servers are protected by multiple layers of security, and nothing is actually stored on them except for aggregated and anonymized metadata, such as what types of apps are being using. That information is used to help illustrate your data usage and savings, as well as for research to help improve the service.

Onavo cannot read or compress encrypted SSL traffic, however. The only exception is Microsoft Exchange mail traffic, which requires the user's explicit approval. This can be turned off from the app's Settings.

Interface and Performance
Setting up Onavo Extend takes little more than downloading it from the App Store. The app then installs a configuration profile on your device, which redirects your Web connection through Onavo's proxy.

Once installed, you may want to configure a few of the settings, like how much quality you'll let Onavo sacrifice when it compresses images, for instances. You might also choose to not compress email. Other than those optional customizations, Onavo is ready to roll immediately.

Whenever your iPhone operates via a 3G or LTE connection, Onavo Extend will do its thing. You don't have to babysit it or repeatedly launch it. Onavo pauses automatically when a Wi-Fi connection is being used and resumes when it's lost.

Onavo just works. And on the chance that it doesn't (some users have reported interference with MMS and voicemail, which we were not able to reproduce), there's a button called Diagnose and Repair that attempts to resolve any problems by reinstalling the app.

The user interface consists of just three menus: Data Saver, Reports, and Settings. Data Saver tells you if the app is running and how much data you're currently saving, as a percentage, for different types of uses, like Web and Exchange Mail. The Reports area presents a graph and associated list that breaks down your data usage statistics per month, or from the month's start to date. The Settings menu provides those few options mentioned earlier, such as image compression.

Onavo worked flawlessly throughout our tests. We tried the app on iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. If you leave the image-compression quality at the default setting, "medium," you'll likely notice the difference in sharpness on websites that typically have great graphics, like CNN.com and NYTimes.com. Slide the image compression up until it registers as "high," however, and your eye won't be able to see the difference.

Regular text on websites is unaffected by the compression, so you never have to worry about a page becoming unreadable. Even when you zoom in, text is every bit as clear as it is with data compression turned off. It should be noted that routing your data through Onavo's servers has an effect on speed, but it isn't drastic. Web pages take longer to load, but only by a few seconds.''

If you choose to use email compression, another of the options, Onavo reformats your emails to plain text, meaning no more bold, italics, and other formatting, and no more images either. At the end of these emails you'll see a message that says, "This message has been downloaded as plain text." If you want to see the full, uncompressed email, you can scroll down a bit further and tap on the Download Full Message button.

iPhone Data Extended
In our testing, Onavo reported savings of upward of 50 percent on data usage (with image quality set to Medium) for Web content and Exchange mail. We also saw a 43 percent reduction in Twitter use, as well as 33 percent reduction in data for iTunes/AppStore. Note, though, that Onavo Extend can't compress VoIP data, like Skype calls, or streaming video, so save those Netflix and YouTube videos for when a solid Wi-Fi connection is at hand. But 50 percent is still an impressive figure. If you regularly use 1GB of data per month, it means you would save 500MB.

For international travelers, where every megabyte counts, Onavo Extend is an essential iPhone app. And if you're looking to downgrade your monthly data plan to save money on your monthly bill, it's a great tool to help you monitor your data consumption habits, and in many instances, help you lower them.

Italy's quake scientists jailed

Six Italian scientists and an ex-government official have been sentenced to six years in prison over the 2009 deadly earthquake in L'Aquila.

A regional court found them guilty of multiple manslaughter.

Prosecutors said the defendants gave a falsely reassuring statement before the quake, while the defence maintained there was no way to predict major quakes.

The 6.3 magnitude quake devastated the city and killed 309 people.

It took Judge Marco Billi slightly more than four hours to reach the verdict in the trial, which had begun in September 2011.

'Alarming' case

The seven - all members of the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks - were accused of having provided "inexact, incomplete and contradictory" information about the danger of the tremors felt ahead of 6 April 2009 quake, Italian media report.

In addition to their sentences, all have been barred from ever holding public office again, La Repubblica reports.

In the closing statement, the prosecution quoted one of its witnesses, whose father died in the earthquake.

It described how Guido Fioravanti had called his mother at about 11pm on the night of the earthquake - straight after the first tremor.

"I remember the fear in her voice. On other occasions they would have fled but that night, with my father, they told themselves what the risk commission had said. And they stayed."

'Hasty sentence'

The judge also ordered the defendants to pay court costs and damages.

Lawyers have said that they will appeal against the sentence.

Some scientists have warned that the case might set a damaging precedent, deterring experts from sharing their knowledge with the public for fear of being targeted in lawsuits, the BBC's Alan Johnston in Rome reports.

Earlier, more than 5,000 scientists signed an open letter to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in support of the group in the dock.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? While Robert Griffin III is quickly becoming the NFL's most exciting quarterback, there's none better than Eli Manning with the game on the line.

Manning one-upped the Washington Redskins' rookie sensation with a pinpoint 77-yard scoring pass to Victor Cruz with 1:13 to play and the New York Giants overcame a late touchdown toss by Griffin to defeat the Washington Redskins 27-23 on Sunday.

"With our offense and Eli at the helm, we're never too worried," Cruz said. "No matter what situation we're in, no matter how many points we need or a field goal we need, we have the confidence we can do it. We have a lot of confidence in each other, and in Eli."

The winning drive was the 22nd of Manning's career in either the fourth quarter or overtime, his second this season and eighth over the past two seasons. This pass might have been one of the most improbable.

"He sure proved it today," Shanahan said after his team (3-4) blew a chance to move into a tie for first place in the NFC East. "It was a great throw. He was double- covered but (Manning) put it right on the money."

Manning, who finished 26 of 40 for 337 yards, had to make the throw a little sooner than he wanted.

"I kind of threw it high and deep and saw the coverage and was hoping Victor saw it the same way I did," he said. "I didn't see the ball get caught. I heard the cheer and that was a good sign. I got up in time to see him run into the end zone."

Manning triumphantly pumped his fist once after the play as the more than 80,000 fans at MetLife Stadium erupted with cheers.

"He did a good job leading his team to victory today," said Griffin, who ran for 89 yards and passed for 258 and two touchdowns. "When the game is on the line, you want the ball in your hand, no doubt about it. He made the play to win it."

Griffin had Washington moving when Moss was tackled by Chase Blackburn after an 11-yard reception and rookie Jayron Hosley recovered at the Washington 43.

"There's no excuse for them, but with all that stuff, we had a chance to win at the end," Griffin said.

The wild finish capped a game in which both quarterbacks also made major mistakes.

Ahmad Bradshaw and Andre Brown scored on 1-yard runs and Lawrence Tynes kicked a pair of field goals for the Giants, who won despite giving up 480 yards in total offense.

Griffin was 20 of 28 with Moss catching both his TD passes. Fellow rookie Alfred Morris gained 120 yards rushing.

The Giants had 396 yards in total offense, with the biggest chunk coming on Manning's pass to Mr. Salsa.

Before the wild finish, the second half was dominated by turnovers.

Griffin was picked off by safety Stevie Brown and his 41-yard return late in the third quarter set up Bradshaw's 1-yard plow-job into the end zone, a play which was reviewed.

Griffin moved Washington into position to tie the game on the next possession, but he fumbled after being sacked by Jason Pierre-Paul and Linval Joseph recovered the ensuring fumble at the Giants 29.

2	Brief overview	This is the time to tell the reader what the game is about. By the time they have read this paragraph they will know what genre the game is, setting etc.. the who, what, when, where, why of the game.
3	History	Is there history to the game? Maybe its like the tenth one in the series, maybe it was delayed for a year, maybe there was some other drama that happened during production.
4	Lead in	This part of the review is generally how the game starts, write out in detail how the game starts and leads you into the game play.
5	Game Play	General game play, how it plays? Take notice to character movement, quests, character flow, items in the game such as weapons, magic, spells, game mechanics, is it easy to control the character etc..
6	Storyline	Does the game have a good storyline? Do scenes transition properly withing the game in an understandable manner? Or is it confusing to know whats happening?
7	Cinematic	How are the Cinematic, story and cut scenes?? Often times this is the goal of the gamer to finish a level so they can watch the next cut scene or continue the story (if it?s good)
8	In Game Graphics	How are the graphics, rendering, flow, movement, pixelation, do the characters render properly when fast movements are happening?
9	Sound	How is the sound track? Are there any notable musicians that created the sound track? Is it just some 8 bit music like back in the original Nintendo days?
10	Characters	Characters, character types, Character development. Original, wll thought out, two dimensional?
11	Conclusion	Your own personal opinion of the game based.
12	Pros	What you thought were the best points and what you want to mention.
13	Cons	What you thought the worst things were about the game.
14	Star Rating	Generally a 0/10 scale.
15	Game Stats info	List in point form cost, platforms, ESRB rating, release date
