Military Veterans Put Memories into Words

Whatever your stories or viewpoints from your military service, an upcoming workshop will help you find a creative way to express your thoughts.

"Proud to Be" book cover by Deborah Marshall

Helping Veterans tell their war stories, the Missouri Humanities Council, the Warriors Alliance and the Springfield-Greene County Library are putting on a non-fiction and poetry workshop.

During the six week session, Missouri veterans and their families will learn how to express their war experiences. As a strong believer in writing and words, Lorraine Sandstorm, manager of the Springfield Greene County Library, says that veterans need an opportunity to articulate their past lives.

?Especially those just coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. They are coming back to this country and are trying to fit into the life they used to know and we will help them to, kind of, tell their story,? said Sandstorm.

This workshop is based off a similar program in St. Louis, where author Deborah Marshall put together a collection of writings and photos by 73 veterans and family members. Published in 2012, the final product was the book, ?Proud to Be.?

Articles from this workshop will be read on September 28th at the Library?s Wordfest. For more information, visit our website at KSMU.org
