Afghan president confirms his intention to sign security pact with US

Afghan President Hamid Karzai reaffirmed his intention to sign a security pact with the United States even though the talks on the issue came to a halt a month ago.

Karzai addressed the issue during his meeting with the Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, in Kabul on Monday, July 22.

He said the Afghan people have been suffering from the protracted war for many years, want to restore peace and are ready to sign a security agreement with the U.S. on condition that it leads to peace and stability in the country, the presidential office said.

The future pact will set out the terms of the U.S. presence in Afghanistan after the end of the NATO mission in late 2014.
